Surrey Eagles finish 2023 leading BCHL’s Coastal Conference

The Surrey Eagles finished off 2023 with two big wins.

The South Surrey-based British Columbia Hockey League team defeated the Merritt Centennials 4-1 at home on Friday, Dec. 29, with Zachary Wagnon, Ryan Schelling and goaltender Ajeet Gundarah – who even earned an assist with Wagnon’s second-period goal – named first, second and third stars of the night.

They continued their winning with a 6-0 final score vs. the Langley Rivermen at George Preston Arena on Saturday, Dec. 30. with forward Ryden Evers scoring two of the game’s six goals, both in the first, and both assisted by Caden Cranston, who also scored an unassisted goal in the third period.

Cranston, Gundarah and Evers were named the first, second and third stars of the Eagles’ final game of 2024.

The team finished 2023 leading the Coastal Conference with 44 points and 27 games played.

The Interior Conference’s Penticton Vees lead the league with 46 points and 30 games played, followed closely by the Kelowna Warriors, who are tied with the Eagles at 44 points, but with 30 games played.

The Eagles take on the rival Rivermen again on Friday, Jan. 5 on their home ice at South Surrey Arena with a 7 p.m. puck drop for their ‘Glow Stick Giveaway’ game.

Followed that, the Surrey team plays two more home games, Jan. 7 and 12, both against the Coquitlam Express, with the Jan. 7 game being a “Seniors Night” promotion; both Sunday games start at 4 p.m.
