The Cloverdale Spurs lost twice to Pembina Hills of Manitoba, and settled for the silver medal at the 13U Western Championships in Altona, Manitoba.
Cloverdale won three of their first four games to advance to today's (Sunday) gold medal game, and took a 3-2 lead into the fourth inning. Pembina Hills scored seven times over the final four innings for the victory.
Rhys Folick hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the first inning to give Cloverdale a 2-1 lead. After Manitoba tied the score, Zaine McConnell singled to score Wyatt Cobb for a 3-2 Cloverdale lead.
A double from Ben McCartney scored Trent Peters for the final Spurs run of the game, which cut the difference to 6-4 after five innings.
Cloverdale went 2-1 (won-lost) to finish atop their four-team group in the round robin, taking top spot on a tiebreaker with Regina and Pembina Hills.
Cloverdale's first game of the tournament was a 15-10 victory over Calgary on Thursday evening, with Liam Knight of the Spurs going four-for-five at the plate with a double, three runs batted in (RBI)s and two runs scored. Romero Snow also had a trio of RBI's.
An 8-3 victory over Regina on Friday morning clinched first place in their group and a place in Saturday's semifinal playoff. The Spurs scored in each of the first five innings to take an 8-0 lead into the final two frames. Jonathon McGill was three-for-three with a double and three RBIs.
The Spurs fell 4-3 to Pembina Hills of Manitoba in the final game of group play Friday evening. Trailing 2-1 in the bottom of the sixth inning, Cloverdale went up 3-2 after McGill scored from third on a wild pitch and Knight singled to score Noah Dube.
Pembina Hills scored twice in the top of the seventh fort the win.
Snow was the top batter for the Spurs with two hits, concluding a double, and an RBI.
The Spurs faced North Winnipeg, the runner-up team from the other group, in Saturday's semifinal and had little trouble in a 12-4 win. Cloverdale led 6-2 after rthe first inning, 10-2 after two and 12-2 after the third.
Folick collected six RBIs on three hits for Cloverdale, including three on a first-inning home run. He added a two-run single in the second. Dube had a pair of doubles and two RBIs.
Cloverdale qualified for the Western Canadian tournament by placing second at the Pee Wee AAA provincial championships in Cloverdale earlier this month.
