Staff Sgt. Major Dave Woods, centre, chats with a well-wisher at his retirement party last week at the Cloverdale Legion. Woods has retired after 43 years with the RCMP. He’s is a familiar face in Cloverdale, where he spent seven years as District Commander of the Surrey RCMP’s Port Kells/Cloverdale office.
During his time here he convened regular community consultative meetings, bringing residents and business representatives together to search for positive avenues to increase community safety awareness.
He also penned a column for the Reporter called the Commander’s Corner. Woods and the Surrey RCMP worked alongside a host of other agencies, businesses, groups and churches to create an extreme cold weather shelter in Cloverdale.
In 2008 he was named Police Officer of the Year, an honour chosen by the citizens of Surrey. He originally intended to retire in 2010, only to receive a call from former Surrey RCMP Chief Supt. Fraser MacRae proposing a new assignment. Woods spent the next two years working at the Surrey RCMP’s headquarters.
