VIDEO: Trailer goes up in flames, 2 people taken to hospital in Chilliwack

Blaze happened in 30-foot travel trailer on Elgin Drive on Easter long weekend

Two people were taken to hospital following a trailer fire in Chilliwack on Easter long weekend.

The call came in around 9 a.m. on Saturday, March 30 for a fire in a 30-foot travel trailer on Elgin Drive in the Fairfield neighbourhood.

Crews with the Chilliwack Fire Department who were en route to the fire reported a column of smoke could be seen in the area.

When they arrived on scene, firefighters said the trailer was fully engulfed in flames. The trailer was located in the backyard of a residential property with houses nearby.

The two occupants of the trailer escaped, but early reports stated that one person had burns to their arm and hand.

There were also reports of propane tanks exploding.

The fire was knocked down within minutes of crews arriving.

“Crews quickly advanced hose lines and were able to swiftly knock down the fire and prevent damage to nearby structures,” assistant fire chief Chris Wilson stated in a press release.

He added that the two people were taken to hospital for smoke inhalation and minor injuries.

BC Ambulance Service was also on scene and RCMP was called for traffic control.

Minutes after firefighters were called out to this blaze, they were called to the area of Broadway Street and First Avenue for a report of black smoke seen coming from a house. When firefighters arrived, they confirmed the smoke that was seen was actually from the Elgin Drive fire, two kilometres away.

Approximately 12 firefighters from Halls 1 and 4 responded to Elgin Drive. There were no firefighter injuries and the fire is under investigation by Chilliwack Fire Department officials.
