UPDATED: Christmas Day crash in Lower Mainland likely connected to other crime

Details of early evening incident on Langley-Surrey border sketchy, but multiple vehicles involved

Mounties are investigating a Christmas crash in Langley inaccurately rumoured to involve gunfire.

Not the case, although it may relate to another crime, said Langley RCMP Sgt. Joe Leeson.

Emergency crews were called to reports of a multi-vehicle collision that occurred on the Langley-Surrey border, in the 19600-block of 80th Avenue on Christmas Day, at about 6:35 p.m.

Two vehicles reportedly sustained signficant damage, but it doesn’t appear anyone was injured.

Langley RCMP had that section of road in the Willoughby neighbourhood cordoned off for several hours after, to facilitate their investigation.

There were unconfirmed reports on social media that the incident involved shots fired.

Leeson clarified that to be false.

“This is not related to any shooting incident that I’m aware of,” he said. But it could be connected with the foiled theft of some material from a construction site in Langley.

Either way, two suspects were reported “fleeing” the scene of the crash on foot. Officers and the K9 unit were called in on a search, which Leeson said proved fruitful a short time after the crash.

Two adult men were arrested and taken into custody, Leeson said, noting they’ve since been released.

In the meantime, Christmas night was busy for local police and firefighters due to the high winds.

Leeson noted Mounties were kept hopping with alarms calls caused by power failures. And he pointed to a few incidents in Walnut Grove in particular, where at least two commercial businesses were broken into while hydro was done.

Thieves, he said, took advantage of the numerous outages.

Forensic teams have combed over both locations and “suspects are being developed,” Leeson said.

Power was knocked out to a few thousand Langley-area homes overnight, due to the high winds knocking trees down across wires, BC Hydro reported.
