Construction of the new stadium at Bear Creek Park in Surrey is close to being done.

The 2,200-seat grandstand is set to open early next year, according to city staff, followed by track renovation work in late spring/early summer and full project completion by early fall 2024.

Laurie Cavan, general manager of Surrey’s Parks, Recreation and Culture department, updated the construction timeline in a recent email to the Now-Leader.

“The grandstand portion (is) expected to obtain substantial completion at the end of 2023, with the building being open to the public in early 2024,” Cavan noted.

The grandstand will be used for track and field, football and other sports and events at the park.

Construction began in the fall of 2022. Richmond-based Heatherbrae Builders pitched the lowest bid to build the grandstand, and Surrey city council approved the construction contract in July 2022. The bid amount was $23,294,250 — a few million dollars lower than the initial $27.5 million project budget.

The facility is described as a new “destination athletics centre” for Surrey, with permanent seating for 2,200 people (two-thirds covered) and possible expansion of another 1,000 temporary seats.

Originally, the new facility was to include a synthetic turf field, but grass will remain in the oval.
