A Surrey RCMP officer has shot a man in North Surrey, after he confronted the officer with a knife.

On Thursday, at about 7 a.m., Surrey RCMP responded to a domestic dispute, which apparently involved reportedly being stabbed in a basement suite of a home, in the 12000 block of 100 Avenue.

When the Surrey Mounties first arrived, an RCMP officer was  confronted by an armed man.

"Police report that upon arrival, an interaction occurred between an officer and a male with a knife," the Independent Investigations Office said in a release. "During the course of this interaction the male was shot."

One source says the man was shot in the chest.

The man was taken to Royal Columbian Hospital in New Westminster where he is in stable condition.

A female was later take to the same hospital with minor injuries, which did not involve stab wounds.

Surrey RCMP Major Crimes and the Independent Investigation Office (IIO) is on scene now.

The focus of the IIO investigation is to determine if any officer may have committed an offence as a result of the injuries suffered by the male.

Any potential witnesses are asked to call the IIO at 1-855-446-8477.
