Strong winds set for the Strait of Georgia have prompted several Monday ferry sailings to be cancelled.
A wind warning was issued for Greater Victoria and the Southern Gulf Islands as Environment Canada said strong gusts may cause damage. A frontal system is expected to bring gusts between 70 km/h and 90 km/h on the evening of March 11.
The forecast conditions bringing high winds to the Strait of Georgia led to BC Ferries scrapping four sailings between Greater Victoria and Tsawwassen. Those include the 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. trips leaving Swartz Bay and the noon and 4 p.m. sailings out of the Lower Mainland.
BC Ferries will contact those with reservations for the impacted trips to let them know if they can be fit on an alternate sailing Monday, or if their booking is cancelled. Fares will be refunded if bookings are cancelled.
Winds are expected to ease before midnight. Environment Canada warned of loose objects being tossed by the wind and causing injury or damage. The agency also said the wind could break tree branches and cause power outages.
