Police say officers surrounded a home in the 15200 block of 28th Avenue in South Surrey on Saturday afternoon (Dec. 10) due to a mental health call involving a person who had barricaded themselves inside.

Neil Stevens, who lives in the area, told the Now-Leader that he could see police were talking, over a loudspeaker, to an individual inside the home. Stevens said the person was “not responding” to the police.

After several hours of trying to negotiate, police set off a flashbang inside the house, he said.

“You could hear the smash in the window,” said Stevens.

Police then sent a drone up and flew it around the house. Shortly after that, Stevens said, police gained access to the home, and the person inside was removed, arrested and taken to hospital under the Mental Health Act.
