Schools and some businesses closed for a second day in Surrey

More snow and freezing rain is expected later today

Classes are cancelled at schools throughout the Surrey for a second day in a row.

In fact, all public schools in Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley are shut Thursday (Jan. 18) for a second day, with more winter weather expected a day after a snowstorm caused havoc in southern British Columbia.

Environment Canada says significant snowfall and a prolonged period of freezing rain are on the way for parts of Metro Vancouver and the valley including Langley, Abbotsford, Chilliwack and Hope.

The agency says snow is expected late Thursday afternoon and will turn into freezing rain later in the evening.

Recycling waste collection for the Thursday (Jan. 18) and Friday (Jan. 19) collection areas is proceeding as planned, stated The City of Surrey in a post on X (formerly known as Twitter). “Organics collection has been suspended for the remainder of the week.”

“Any missed streets due to road conditions will be serviced throughout the week including Saturday. Please note that for the Wednesday collection area, recycling carts will be collected on Saturday, January 20.”

Private schools throughout the region are also closed for the day, including Pacific Academy, Surrey Christian School, White Rock Christian Academy.

Many post secondary schools are also closed for the day.

Kwantlen Polytechnic University and Simon Fraser University: Surrey announced all their in person classes at services are cancelled. Online classes and services will continue as planned.

Surrey Food Banks posted on Facebook they will be closed Thursday (Jan. 18).

The closure is, “due to the road conditions after the snowstorm yesterday, and we are watching the weather forecast situation carefully before considering open our doors,” reads the post.

“If you have any urgent concerns or inquiries, feel free to reach out to us through our social media channels,” stated Surrey Food Banks. “If you are schedule to pick up your food today or if you have an appointment (first registration or need to update your profile), please, don’t worry. Call us next week and we can easily find another day for your visit.”

Canada Post announced in a media release Thursday (Jan. 18) that the delivery service alert for Metro Vancouver had been “downgraded to yellow.”

“This means we will make every effort deliver today, but there may be delays and we may not reach some addresses because of ongoing icy conditions,” reads the release.

Many spent their snow days Wednesday shoveling driveways and sidewalks.

Netwon resident, Kathleen Johnson got the neighbourhood kids involved.

She encouraged the kids to come help shovel driveways and their cul-de-sac with the reward of building snowman when they were finished.

“We were out there for hours and the kids enjoyed every minute,” Johnson said.
