Students in the brewery program at Kwantlen Polytechnic University collaborated with Molson Coors’ Fraser Valley Brewery to develop a Czech-style dark lager – available at the Brew Lab on the Langley campus.
KPU students worked with Molson to brainstorm different recipes before applying ideas practically to develop new brews alongside industry experts.
Keely Johnston, head brewer of Molson, said it was an “amazing” experience.
“This program sets future brewers up for success int he brewing industry and beyond,” she said.
After a trial day of brewing, the team ran test batches to refine the recipe. Eventually, a Czech-style dark lager was created, with a twist of aromantic orange peel and Peruvian cacao nibs.
Brewery instructor and program chair, Dominic Bernard, said it was an opportunity for students to learn from a world-renowned brewery.
“This collaboration creates a platform for dialogue and sharing of ideas between all participants,” he said.
Students Benee Stevens and Lucy Chang said it was empowering to work with a female industry expert.
“Knowing that a woman is the head brewer of one of the biggest breweries in B.C. and being able to look up to someone like that is very inspiring,” Stevens said.
The new limited-edition dark lager, named “Czecolate Lager,” is available in 32 oz and 64 oz, or growler fills for $7 and $12, respectively.
People can make a purchase every Friday between 1 and 6 p.m.
KPU’s Brew Lab is located at 20901 Langley Bypass.
