After a two-day closure due to snow, schools across Surrey reopened to students Friday morning (Jan. 19).

District officials announced the move on X (formerly Twitter) early Friday, encouraging those who were planning to return to class to “dress warmly & exercise extra caution during your commute.”

Parents choosing to keep their children home for another day are asked to notify their child’s school.

All Kwantlen Polytechnic and Simon Fraser University campuses reopened Friday, as did private institutions such as Southridge School and White Rock Christian Academy. Surrey Christian School, however, remained closed for the day.

Public schools in Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley closed Wednesday and Thursday after a snowstorm caused havoc across southern B.C.

On Friday, Environment Canada warned of “patchy freezing rain” in Metro Vancouver.

“A Pacific frontal system has brought warm air aloft while at the surface there are still pockets of temperatures below freezing,” an alert reads.

“In these areas freezing rain is likely for early this morning until temperatures climb above zero.

“Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become icy and slippery.”
