Canada’s leading expert on self-regulation in children is coming to Surrey.
The Surrey School District will present Calm, Alert and Learning: A Session with Dr. Stuart Shanker at the Bell Performing Arts Centre on Aug. 24.

According to research, one of the keys to student success is self-regulation: the ability to self-monitor and modify emotions, to focus or shift attention, to control impulses, to tolerate frustration and to delay gratification.
In short, self-regulation is the ability to stay calm, focused and alert, allowing a child to better integrate and assimilate information and sequence his thoughts and actions.

Shanker, a research professor at York University, says educators, parents and caregivers have an important role to play in helping children develop the crucial ability to self-regulate.
Shanker will explore the five major domains – what they are, how they work, what they look like in the classroom and what can be done to help strengthen them.

The session runs from 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and tickets are $20 each with a light lunch provided. Tickets are available on a first come, first serve basis. To register, go to http://events.sd36.bc.ca/
