It’s the most anticipated movie of the Christmas blockbuster season, and the Clova Cinema is offering a special preview to local audiences.
Cloverdale’s landmark single-screen cinema presents The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, Thursday, Dec. 13 at 10 p.m., kicking off a two-week engagement of Lord of the Ring trilogy director Peter Jackson’s adaptation of the J.R.R. Tolkien classic fantasy adventure.
Tickets to the sneak peek are $10 – more than a regular ticket – because the screening is a fundraiser for the cinema’s conversion to a digital projection system.
Major motion picture studios are all phasing out 35-mm film, forcing cinemas to make the switch to digital, or draw the curtains permanently and go dark.
The Clova celebrated its 65th anniversary last May. The family-owned and operated movie house held a fundraising concert Nov. 16 to help raise money for the conversion, an expensive prospect for the cinema, but one that’s absolutely critical if it is to keep its doors open.
Regular prices are in effect for the regular run of the The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, playing Dec. 14 to 20.
