The annual Terry Fox Run – inspired by a one-legged young man who ran the equivalent of a marathon each day until he was forced to stop his cross-Canada journey – is bound inspire grand gestures.
That's true here in Cloverdale, too. Jessica Hernandez, 11, has been participating in the run/walk in Cloverdale every year since she was a baby.
The Cambridge Elementary student realized she wanted to make a very personal contribution to the cancer cause this year.
Her nanny is battling cancer and decided to get a wig, Jessica's mom Debbie reports.
So when Jessica – who has beautiful, thick, long brunette locks – went to the salon for her standard back-to-school one-inch trim this September, she inquired about the length needed for wig making donations.
Eight inches, came the reply.
Jessica was able to donate a full 12 inches, and still has plenty of her own hair left over.
"She has thick hair, so I am sure it will help put a smile on someone," Debbie says. "We are told that hair donations are down right now, because a lot of kids and adults have shorter hair, and they do need a minimum eight inches in length."
Debbie Hernandez says with the annual Terry Fox run ahead on Sept 18, it is a good reminder that anyone and everyone can help in some way.
The Cloverdale Terry Fox Run for cancer research will start and finish at the Cloverdale Legion, 17567 57 Avenue on Sunday, Sept. 18. Registration starts at 9 a.m. and the Run begins at 10 a.m. Official merchandise will be on sale and there will be face painting, prize draws, a silent auction, refreshments for participants, and entertainment, including a performance by the Clayton Heights Jazz Band.
There are one, five, and 10 km routes for walking, jogging, running, cycling – whatever participants choose.
There is no entry fee but donations will gratefully be received. For more information or to volunteer please contact Elaine Gooliaeff at 604-533-2027.
