Air, Army cadets from Cloverdale pick up honours at annual ceremonial review

Cloverdale’s Flight Sgt. Timothy Ro and Sgt. Angeli Lumumba of the 746 Lightning Hawk Royal Air Cadet Squadron have been recognized for their achievements.

Surrey students have won the 746 Lightning Hawk Royal Air Cadet Squadron’s top awards.

The squadron held its year-end annual ceremonial review June 4 at Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary, where the prestigious Royal Canadian Legion Cadet Medal of Excellence was presented to Sgt. Angeli Lumumba of Clayton Heights Secondary.

The award, which recognizes individual achievement in the of citizenship, was presented to Lumumba by Wilma McEwen, president of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 21 (Langley).

Flight Sgt. Timothy Ro of Pacific Academy has earned the Lord Strathcona Medal, bestowed on a cadet in recognition of exemplary performance in physical and military training. It was presented by Major Wayne Heal.

Ro also received the most proficient Senior NCO Award, and won a summer course scholarship that will allow him to obtain his private pilot’s license through Air Cadets.

The 746 Lightning Hawk Squadron has more than 150 cadets enrolled in the program. It’s open to youth ages 12 to 18. An open house and registration is set for Saturday, Sept. 10 at the squadron’s hangar at the Langley Airport. For more details closer to the date, visit 746lightninghawk.com.

Highlanders lauded

Chief Warrant Officer Jarod Rogers (pictured at left, Phil Edge photo), a Grade 12 student at Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary School, won the Jack DeLorme Esprit de Corps award. It’s given in recognition of an outstanding cadet in memory of John (Jack) DeLorme, who served with the Loyal Edmonton Regiment during the Second World War.

The DeLorme family has a long-established relationship with the Seaforth Highlander Cadets and the 2277 RCA Cadet Corps., which are based in Langley.

MWO Brandon Reid, a Grade 12 student at Clayton Heights Secondary, earned the Training Officer’s Award for his dedication and hard work as a leader within the corps.

Sgt. Matt Hitchinson (LTS) has been chosen by his peers as outstanding among the fourth year cadets, earning the Top Gold Star award. This summer he is attending a six-week leadership and challenge course at the Rocky Mountain Cadet Summer Training Centre.
