On a weekend when temperatures dropped well below freezing, plenty of people took the opportunity to do some outdoor skating in South Surrey.
As vehicles whizzed past on King George Boulevard, skaters and hockey players were busy getting geared up along the edge of Serpentine Fen Sunday (Jan. 14), where plenty of other skaters were enjoying the outdoor surface coutesty of Mother Nature.
With temperatures hovering around -2C Sunday, an arctic outflow warning from Environment Canada had already been lifted, after frigid temperatures and high wind chills affected most of B.C.’s south coast Thursday (Jan. 11) through Saturday (Jan. 13).
The fen, located near Art Knapp Nursery, attracted skaters and hockey players of all ages – including brothers Rhett, 4, and Boden, 2 – looking to enjoy the sunny skies as well as the ice.

Temperatures were expected to start rising Sunday, according to Evnironment Canada, reaching -1 C by Tuesday (Jan. 16) with some potential for snow Tuesday through Thursday (Jan. 18).
