Youth Week is celebrated in Surrey with a variety of free events and gatherings May 1-7.

An “action-packed week” is promised for youth aged 10 to 18 years, including drop-in sports, video games tournaments, cooking challenges, a “Bob Ross” paint night, jewelry making and more. The list of Surrey events is posted on surrey.ca/youthweek.

The week will end Tuesday, May 7 with the annual SASSY Awards (Service Above Self Surrey Youth) at Surrey Arts Centre, where Surrey-area youth will be recognized for their achievements. Local musician Richard Tichelman will perform during the event, which starts at 7 p.m. Tickets are free on eventbrite.ca, and more details are found on sassyawardssurrey.ca.

B.C. Youth Week is created to build a strong connection between youth and their communities.

“Surrey has the largest youth population in B.C.,” noted Mayor Brenda Locke, “and I encourage our young people to take a look at the activities we’re offering this year, explore their unique interests and have fun with their peers.”
