The Clayton Community Centre is hosting a family-focused event this month.

A press release from the City of Surrey entices Claytonites to come down and “celebrate the richness of arts and culture” at the centre Sept. 23.

Organized as part of Culture Days (Sept. 22 to Oct. 15), folks at the Clayton Community Centre (CCC) are inviting the public down to explore a myriad of interactive activities the result in the creation of art.

“We are thrilled to partner with our local artists and makers for a day of exploration, creation and connection as we embrace the beauty of our community,” said Kim Drabyk, manager of Community Arts Clayton.

Visitors can make ink prints with LEGO, create art with yarn, and enjoy many other activities. There will also be a theatre show for toddlers. And the CCC will have a food truck on site.

George Klassen, a local piano technician, will be painting his upcycled canoe “Middle Sea” during the event. Middle Sea was created from three derelict pianos. “Apart from the fibreglass shell,” reads the release, “nearly the entire canoe is made of old piano parts, including ivory key tops, wood handles, and soundbar material.”

The CCC will also host a knitting and dance workshop. “Yarn Around” will combine knitting, dance, visual arts, and music. The workshop will begin at 1 p.m. in the Community Living Room.

The centre’s Performing Arts Studio will host a percussion and dance workshop at 3 p.m. with Foolish Operations dancers and musicians.

Culture Days has become the largest cultural event in Canada, attracting millions of annual attendees to thousands of free activities and performances hosted by artists, cultural organizations and municipalities in hundreds of communities across Canada.
