Surrey Board of Trade will induct Rory Morgan as board chair during its 59th annual general meeting (AGM) June 22 at Sheraton Vancouver Guildford Hotel.

Morgan, with KSW Lawyers, said he’s honoured to serve as SBOT’s 57th chair.

“The future-focused and policy governance structure of our board of directors enables the Surrey Board of Trade to continue to be a leader in delivering in its unique diversified economic service portfolio to help our member businesses,” Morgan stated in a SBOT news release.

The June 22 AGM will feature keynote speakers Brenda Bailey (Minister of Jobs, Economic Development and Innovation) and also Jagrup Brar (Minister of State for Trade).

A trial lawyer for almost 25 years, Morgan has served as a SBOT director since 2018.

“He has helped injured people in Surrey and throughout British Columbia since 1999,” a bio says. “He is passionate about giving back to the community, and continuously participates in various fundraisers throughout the Lower Mainland. He is a strong advocate for fairness and equality both in the legal system and in society.”

Four new SBOT directors are Ania Cox (Coast Capital Savings), Nicky Dhaliwal (Blueprint at UBC), Devinder Gill (RBC Royal Bank) and Richard Fung (Shoppers Drug Mart).

Returning directors are Sasha Ramnarine (Remedios and Company), Mike Spiess (ScotiaBank), Roger Steers (RJC Engineers) and Rowena Rizzotti (Health & Technology District at the Lark Group). Others aboard for the 2023-24 term are Joslyn Young (Vancouver Fraser Port Authority, Vice Chair) and Baljit Dhaliwal (Tinker’s Tax & Accounting, Immediate Past Chair).

Existing board directors are David Bennett (FortisBC), Amrita Bhogal (Sunrise Kitchens), Rick Mann (Isle of Mann Property Group), John Michener (Port of Bellingham) and Jason Tonin (Beedie).

Meantime, SBOT will seek support on 20 B.C. government policies at the BC Chamber of Commerce convention June 1-2 in Whistler. The wide-ranging initiatives include expediting the George Massey crossing project, revitalizing Fraser River, connecting incentives to vehicle battery recycling programs, blockchain technology strategy, tying minimum wage to CPI and a “Cure to Congestion” push for reliable transportation funding.
