Organizers of the Surrey Night Market in Cloverdale are bouncing back from last year’s devastating windstorm that saw the multicultural market close several weeks early.
Last week, Surrey Night Market director Satbir Cheema announced the Aug. 29 storm that destroyed the market – tents, lighting and fencing were damaged – hasn’t damped the spirit of organizers, who are forging ahead with plans for a third season.
“The overwhelming support and good wishes offered by the community after last year’s monstrous storm has doubled our resolve to return for a third season starting on June 3,” Cheema said. “We are humbled by the support that the community showed us last year.”
As a goodwill gesture, the market will give a platform to non-profit organizations to help them raise funds for their causes, Cheema added, explaining they will be able to set up a beer garden.
The market will run Fridays and Saturdays (6-11 p.m.) and on Sundays (5-10 p.m.) at the Cloverdale Fairgrounds, from June 3 to Aug. 14.
Free admission will be expanded to include families of Canadian Forces personnel and veterans, children under 48 inches in height, residents of long term care facilities attending as groups, people in wheelchairs who are with attendants, seniors 65 and over, and anyone bringing a non-perishable food item or new toy for donation to local food banks or charities.
