Miss Representation presents first film in series

Kwantlen Polytechnic University group screens Pink Ribbons, Inc. in Surrey on Oct. 9.

Pink Ribbons

Pink Ribbons, Inc. is the first film featured by Kwantlen Polytechnic University’s Miss Representation Action Group’s 2012-2013 documentary series.

The documentary series examines the role mainstream media play in our perceptions of what is real, true, and significant in our culture.

“The Action Group has decided that media misrepresentation of truths, rather than a strict focus on feminist and gender issues, will be the unifying theme of this inaugural documentary series,” says Kwantlen instructor Janice Morris.

Instructor Helen Mendes adds, “the documentary series is aimed at fostering an interdisciplinary culture of faculty, staff, student, and public engagement through the viewing and discussion of documentary film; at the same time, it is aimed at helping to sustain what is already an established community of learning and practice at Kwantlen.”

Lea Pool’s critically acclaimed Pink Ribbons, Inc. will be screened on Oct. 9, 2012, 4:30-9 p.m. at the Surrey campus (72 Avenue and 126 Street) and will include keynote speaker Dr. Judy Z. Segal from UBD, dinner and a moderated town hall/panel discussion.

The Miss Representation Action Group is a Kwantlen-based community of practice, a group of inspired, passionate faculty, staff, students, and communities that came together in response to Kwantlen’s Miss Representation documentary screening and town hall event in January 2012. The Miss Representation Action Group’s mission is to continue the dialogues started at that event, and, as MissRepresentation.org asks, “unit[e] individuals around a common, meaningful goal to spark millions of small actions that ultimately lead to a cross-generational movement to eradicate gender stereotypes and create lasting cultural and sociological change.”
