A White Rock woman with a focus on philanthropy is one of many nominated for the upcoming Women of Distinction Awards.

Carleen Pauliuk, a “proud third-generation White Rocker,” is nominated in the non-profit category of YWCA Metro Vancouver’s 2024 awards event. In total, there are 106 nominees in 12 award categories, with winners to be announced May 13 during a gala fundraiser at Vancouver’s Westin Bayshore.

Pauliuk, who is vice-president, Western Canada of the Arthritis Society Canada, has had a 20-year career as a health-care philanthropy bridge-builder. She is currently developing a three-year strategic plan to support a $500-million campaign and has established a Government Relations Council in both B.C. and Alberta, to explore partnerships for public awareness.

In previous roles, Pauliuk secured more than $225 million in philanthropic funding, working with families, foundations, corporate donors and governments.

“Being recognized by a multitude of donors who nominated me for the non-profit sector award was an unexpected and profound honor. It not only validates the significant work we do in our community but also underscores the deep trust that donors place in us when they choose to make their philanthropic contributions through our teams,” Pauliuk said in an email.

“Being nominated by my community shows that my approach and passion have resonated with each and every one of them, validating our collective efforts.”

Pauliuk, who had a successful career in the corporate sector, says her true passion lies in health-care fundraising.

“Each day, I wake up filled with enthusiasm, determination, and zest, driven to collaborate with some of the most incredible people worldwide. Together, we turn their philanthropic visions into tangible realities. It’s more than a privilege; it’s a calling.” said Pauliuk.

“While the efforts of those of us behind the scenes often remain unseen, I take pride in knowing that my team and I have made a meaningful difference. As I pass by the organizations we’ve helped, I’m reminded that playing even a small part in improving someone’s life is the essence of my existence.”

Born and raised in the seaside community of White Rock, Pauliuk says she can’t imagine living anywhere else in the world.

“Each morning, I relish walking along the promenade or taking the Crescent Beach loop, where the fresh air and the sight of birds provide a rejuvenating start to my day,” she said.

”White Rock is a gem that has long been hidden away, a place that has cherished and shaped me throughout my life. It is my sanctuary from my busy hustle-and-bustle life in the Lower Mainland. I am proud to represent our community.”
