For the third year in a row, the White Rock South Surrey Titans' Junior Bantam football team is headed to the Vancouver Mainland Football League Championship, after a thrilling 38-24 victory over the South Delta Rams in a Sunday (Nov. 10) semifinal at South Surrey Athletic Park.
The win solidified the minor football team's spot in the championship game, where they will look to defend their title against the Coquitlam Chargers this Friday (Nov. 15) at 8 p.m. at South Surrey Athletic Park (Turf 3 — the turf field behind the ball diamonds).
The Titans came out strong in the semifinal, building an early 18-0 lead thanks to a powerful running game and stifling defensive play, WRSS Titans president Drew Kightley noted in an email.
South Delta Rams rallied, however, with 24 unanswered points during the second and third quarters, putting the Titans on their heels. But in true championship fashion, White Rock adjusted and stormed back in the fourth quarter, scoring three rushing touchdowns to reclaim the lead and secure the win, 38-24.
“We knew South Delta would be tough, and they definitely challenged us in the middle of the game,” said head coach Felix Soheili.
“But I’m incredibly proud of how our players responded. We made some key adjustments, kept our composure, and executed when it mattered most. This team has shown tremendous growth all season, and we’re excited for the championship game against Coquitlam.”
The Junior Bantam Titans have had an impressive season, with seven wins and only one loss in regular-season play. With the VMFL title on the line, the upcoming championship game promises to be a highly competitive match-up between two of the league’s top teams.
WRSS Titans' Midget team has also had a stellar season, going undefeated (7-0) in regular season play. They play in the VMFL Midget final against the North Surrey Bears this Sunday, Nov. 17 at 3:30 p.m. at South Surrey Athletic Park (Turf 3).
Friday's VMFL Junior Bantam Championship winner will go on to represent the league at the British Columbia Provincial Football Association (BCPFA) provincials, which will be held on Nov. 24 on Vancouver Island.
