With two days left at BC High School Volleyball Championships, a handful of South Surrey teams are still in contention for a title, as teams get set to hit the court this morning at Langley Events Centre.
In the quad-A senior girls division, both the Semiahmoo Totems and Earl Marriott Mariners were in first in their respective pools heading into Friday morning’s Round of 16, after playing three games apiece Thursday.
In Group N, the Mariners were tops, Van Tech came second, South Delta was third and Mount Baker fourth.
The Totems, meanwhile, were first in Group R, with Lord Byng second, Oak Bay third and Cloverdale’s Lord Tweedsmuir Panthers fourth.
The first games Friday began at 9 a.m., with No. 1-seeded EMS playing No. 4 Kelowna, while Tweedsmuir – seeded fourth – was to take on the top-seeded Belmont Bulldogs. At 11 a.m., Semiahmoo takes on Moscrop. Winners of the morning games move on to quarter-finals Friday, with games set at 4:45 p.m. and 6:45 p.m.
Semifinals are set for 9 a.m. Saturday, with the championship game scheduled for 3 p.m. that day.
In the triple-A senior boys tournament, the Elgin Park Orcas have been one of the biggest surprises of the opening rounds, as the team – which has just eight players – advanced all the way to the final eight, but were set for their toughest test yet Friday morning, when they hit the court at 9 a.m. against top-ranked Mount Baker.
Semiahmoo, meanwhile, was 2-1 through pool play and will square off against Penticton today at 11 a.m. Earl Marriott also went 2-1 in their pool, and will hit the court against the Argyle Pipers today, also at 11 a.m.
