The 2013 version of the BC Scott Tournament of Hearts Ladies Curling Championships started with a bang on Monday at the Cloverdale Curling Club. After a great opening banquet Sunday night at the club, the best teams in BC started play Monday morning.
Defending and three-time B.C. champion Kelly Scott’s team from Kelowna opened the first draw with a win over Vernon’s Roberta Kuhn and then topped off the day with a win over Royal City’s Marilou Richter in the night draw.
Scott sits at 2 – 0, while Cloverdale’s Marla Mallet rink stands at 1 – 1 after win in the morning but a loss in the nightcap.
Play resumes all week with draws at 11 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. through to Thursday with tiebreakers and the first playoff Friday night.
Semi-finals go Saturday at 10 a.m. and 5:30 p.m., with the evening game being televised live on Shaw 4. The final championship game, also slated for Shaw, goes at 2 p.m. Sunday afternoon.
The opening ceremonies featured all 10 teams, their coaches and officials from Curl BC as well as the Host Committee and the numerous club volunteers.
Club member and past Chairperson of the 2011 Scotties, Sherry Russel, served as emcee. She welcomed speakers Terry Vandale of Curl BC, Merlin Wick the President of the Cloverdale Club and Amanda Welton, this year’s Chairperson of the event. Amanda also threw the ceremonial first rock, which was swept perfectly onto the button by one senior club member and a wee little curler from the Club’s Little Rock program.
