Some of the top world and Canadian competitors in bareback, bull riding, ladies barrel racing and saddle bronc return to the Stetson Bowl this weekend for the 66th annual Cloverdale Rodeo.
Dusty LaValley, the 2011 Canadian bareback champion, who placed second at the 2011 Cloverdale Rodeo, is back. He'll meet Kaycee Feild, a 2011 world and 2012 Rodeo Houston bareback champ, as well as Jake Vold of Alberta.
In Saddle Bronc, Cloverdale welcomes back 2011 world and Canadian champion Taos Muncy, who made it to the finals in Cloverdale last year, but didn't place.
Also returning is Cody Wright, recently crowned 2012 Rodeo Houston champion in saddle bronc, as is 2011 Cloverdale Rodeo champion Tyrell Smith.
One of the top Canadian bull riders, Jesse Torkelson, a 2010 Canadian champion, is also returning to Cloverdale.
Barrel racer Britany Fleck is back to defend her title as 2011 Cloverdale Rodeo Champion. She'll face stiff competition from Trula Churchhill, the 2011 Canadian champion and Calgary Stampede's reigning barrel racing champ, Sydni Blanchard. Cloverdale's 2010 champ, Sammi Bessert, is also hoping to reclaim the title.
B.C.'s own Joleen Seitz of Savona, and Julie Leggert of Kamloops are two promising up-and-comers who are part of the barrel racing competition this year.
“This year’s combination of world-class athletes and eager young talent should provide an unforgettable rodeo experience,” said Penny Smythe, Cloverdale Rodeo Chairperson.
“We are excited to welcome the best of the best in the sport of rodeo.”
The invitational format is unique, attracting some of the world's best rodeo competitors, and featuring $300,000 in prize money.
There are five rodeo performances, including the finals. There are two performances Saturday May 19, and Sunday, May 20, at 2 p.m. and at 7:30 p.m. both days.
Monday's finals are at 3 p.m.
