A pair of local athletes have set new Western Canada Summer Games records while winning gold medals in Kamloops.

Sabrina Nettey earned her second medal of the competition ion the women’s 200 metre spring. Her time of 23.99 seconds eclipsed the old mark of 24.28 seconds set four years ago. Nettey edged Leah Walkden of Alberta by .24 seconds. Katie Reid of Surrey won the bronze medal, finishing in 24.41 seconds.

Nettey, a graduate of Johnston Heights Secondary, placed second in the women’s 100m final, just four one-hundredths of a second behind Isatu Fofanah of Alberta, who established a new Western Canada Summer Games record. Netty’s time of 11.75 seconds was also better than the former record of 11.84 seconds set in 2007.

Reid and Nettey also shared a silver medal as part of Team B.C.’s 4x100 team which finished second to Alberta.

Cloverdale’s Rob Gallaugher set the new standard in the men’s long jump.

The 20-year-old Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary graduate jumped 7.22 metres on his second of six attempts, then watched his rivals fall short of that mark. Stephen McPhee of Alberta also jumped beyond the former record, but his best effort of 7.12 metres was still short of Gallaugher.

Sean Keane of White Rock Christian Academy lost a gold medal by two one-hundredths of a second.

Keane, 18, finished the men’s 800m race in 1:52.85, almost a half-second quicker than the Western Canada Games record. But John Pratt of Victoria was the race winner in 1:55.83.

Keane did win gold as part of the Team B.C. 4x400 metres team. Their time of 3:12.56 set a new Western Canada Games record.

Reid, 17, was also part of a record-setting relay team. Her 4x400 metres team was almost five seconds better than the previous record, winning in 3:41.41.

Four other local residents have won silver medals in track and field competition in Kamloops, the host city for the two-week competition.

Surrey’s Django Lovett, 19, was the runner-up in men’s high jump with a leap of 2.10 metres. Jeremy Eckert of Saskatchewan cleared 2.13 metres to take the gold medal.

Justin Kent of Surrey crossed the finish line in second place in the men’s 3,000 metre  steeplechase event. The 19-year-old finished in 9:37.26, 28 seconds behind Gareth Hadfiled of Alberta. Hadfield shaved 10 seconds of the previous Western Canada Games record.

Samantha Kennedy fouled on her last five attempts in the women’s hammer throw, but here first toss of 50.75 metres was enough to win silver. The Cloverdale resident was second only to Taryn Suttie of Saskatchewan, who set a new meet record with an effort of 54.77 metres.
