Calling all sports coaches – Free workshops are being offered in July at the Surrey Sports and Leisure Centre as part of the 2012 BC Summer Games.

There are two free sessions for coaches and assistant coaches:

Sport Readiness Assessment Workshop – Saturday, July 7, from 12-4:30 p.m.

Whistler-based certified strength and conditioning specialist Diana Rochon leads this dynamic session as participants learn to improve athlete adaptability, decrease risks of injuries and maximize performance.

When developing athletes are functionally monitored, fewer leave their sport due to injury. Learn corrective exercises for limitations and imbalances. The testing protocols taught are effective and relatively simple to use.    Assessing fundamental movements using these tools can enable developing athletes to reach their fullest potential.

Concussion Seminar – Sunday, July 8, from 12-2 p.m.

This timely workshop by Sports Med B.C. staff focuses on the latest medical and scientific information about brain injury, sport risk factors, prevention techniques, and concussion management guidelines.

It also includes a practical session where participants review on-field assessment techniques, including the use of the SCAT2 tool and other techniques that help coaches ensure athletes are properly managed in case of head injury.

Nuances of return-to-play decisions will be explored, with ample time for specific questions from the audience.

Both of these clinics are being offered free of charge, but you must pre-register by calling 778-809-4008.

The Surrey Sports and Leisure Centre is located at 16555 Fraser Hwy. The clinics take place in Multipurpose Room 1.

Surrey is the host city for the 2012 BC Summer Games, which run July 19-22.
