A split at home has left the Kwantlen Eagles tied for the final playoff position in the PACWEST men’s basketball standings.

The Eagles fell 94-87 to the Capilano Blues Friday night at the Surrey campus of Kwantlen Polytechnic University, but then topped the Quest Kermodes 102-83 Saturday. Kwantlen is now 4-7 (won-lost), tied with the Douglas Royals for fifth place.

Ali Bosir continued to put up huge numbers for the Eagles against Capilano, scoring 41 points and collecting 18 rebounds. Jag Takhar and Aaron Ram added 18 and 15 points respectively for the home team.

Facing the third-place Kermodes Saturday, the Eagles were up by six at the break and built on their lead throughout the second half.

All five Eagles starters scored in double digits, led by Bosir with 26 points and Ram with 23. Tristan Gruenthaler and Chris Arcangel netted 17 each, with Takhar scoring 15. Bosir also had a game-high 18 boards to pad his PACWEST rebounding lead.

“Our defense won this game for us in the second half,” said Eagles head coach Stefon Wilson. “When you play good defense, the entire team plays with more confidence.”

Kwantlen’s women’s team also won one and lost one at home last weekend.

Down by 10 at halftime Friday against Capilano, Kwantlen played the league leaders even the rest of the way in an 87-77 loss.

Jeannine Yngresso hit six three-point shots and led the Kwantlen offense with 22 points, while Jessica Villadiego and Samantha McPhail added 19 points each.

“We had a slow start which saw us get down big early. From there on it was just tough to claw back,” said head coach Dan Nayebzadeh.

The Eagles topped Quest 78-65 Saturday.

First-year forward Sara Kurath scored 12 of her 16 points in the second half, and also had six rebounds and a pair of steals to lead Kwantlen. McPhail netted 17 points and collected nine rebounds, while Villadiego had 15 points, three rebounds, five assists and five steals.

Kwantlen’s two teams will play twice on the road next weekend, tipping off in Vancouver against the Langara Falcons Friday night with the Douglas Royals in New Westminster. The women play at 6 p.m. and the men start at 8 p.m. both nights.
