It’s World Oceans Day Thursday (June 8) and there’s several ways for Semiahmoo Peninsula residents to help and learn about the importance of the ocean and the role it plays in their everyday lives.
The Friends of Semiahmoo Bay Society are holding an Alien Green Crab Destroyer Lunch and Learn webinar, which will highlight “how the invasive green crab is destroying our ocean ecosystem and what folks are doing about it in Boundary Bay, Drayton Harbour, Washington and Clayoquot Sound near Tofino,” according to the City of White Rock website.
People can register online for the webinar, which runs from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Thursday (June 8).
In White Rock, a shoreline cleanup at East Beach for all ages is scheduled to take place from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. as well, with people encouraged to “bring water and gloves, and dress to get dirty.”
Participants will meet at Memorial Park public washrooms (in front of the pier).

In Green Timbers Urban Forest Park, 14600-block of 100 Avenue in Surrey, meet at the south end of the lake from 6 to 8 p.m. for a Learn to Fish event hosted by Freshwater Fisheries Society of B.C. for youth aged five to 15.
“Learn about hatchery roles, fish identification, proper fish handling, tackle, rod rigging and casting, followed by hands-on fishing at the lake! Rods and tackle provided. Parent participation required,” noted the City of Surrey website.
World Oceans Day is also a reminder to reduce single-use plastic, as it has such a lasting impact on the environment and oceans, and properly dispose of waste, the City of White Rock website said.
