White Rock is to examine striking a new pay parking task force early this year.

Coun. Christopher Trevelyan got the ball rolling on the proposed committee in a motion endorsed by council at the Dec. 10 meeting.

Terms of reference – including timeline and composition of the task force, which Trevelyan suggested may include some residents and members of the business community – were to be worked out by him and city CAO Dan Bottrill for a formal proposal, expected to come before council at the next regular meeting, on Jan. 14.

Trevelyan proposed a task force that would “broadly review and revise pay parking in White Rock, including rates, parking permits and the integration of the new parkade.”

“The task force mandate will be to ensure that rates are competitive with neighbouring jurisdictions; White Rock businesses are supported and that residents receive the best possible value in their city,” he said.

Trevelyan added that the parking picture in White Rock has changed “quite a bit, especially with the opening of the parkade,” – which he said would change how parking is managed by the city.

“We’re going to look at a whole bunch of issues, hopefully, including parking at Peace Arch Hospital, parking along the waterfront seasonally, look at Centennial Arena parking, and also looking at the parking passes with a section of the community and the members of this committee.”

“I’d like this to be started (as soon as possible) and hopefully have something in place by the time the parkade opens up, in terms of who’s on the task force.”

City engineering director Jim Gordon reported in November that the waterfront parkade was due for completion by early spring this year.
