With a record 1,924 families registered so far this holiday season, Surrey Christmas Bureau has issued an “urgent call” for donations of toys and cash.
The organization asks any businesses or families that have held – or plan to hold – toy drives to bring items to its Toy Depot as soon as possible.
This year, the depot is located at the former Stardust roller rink, 10240 City Parkway.
“We have already distributed toys and grocery vouchers to just over 700 families and have matched another 600 families with sponsors through our Adopt a Family program,” Lisa Werring, the bureau’s executive director, said in a release Tuesday.
“We still have well over 600 families, including over 700 children left to serve through the Toy Depot before we close on Dec. 22. We need toys for all ages, boys and girls, from infant to teen. Gift cards are welcome, especially for teenagers.”
The number of clients this year includes 4,356 children, more than 1,000 of those teenagers, Werring said.
She says “many folks like to extend their toy drives as long as possible, but we really need those toys on the shelves now. We never want any parent to feel like they are getting the last toy on the shelf.”
The bureau also needs cash donations to fulfill its grocery hamper program for families, she added.
“So many people are counting on us this year. Community champions are desperately needed to help us make Christmas merry for everyone.”
Toys can be dropped off to the Toy Depot from Monday to Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Also, financial donations can be made through the organization’s website, christmasbureau.com, or at the depot.
