Two Surrey RCMP officers have been released from hospital after a vehicle struck a police cruiser with an officer inside Monday afternoon, pushing it into another parked car and pinning a second Mountie in between.
The incident happened just before 3 p.m. outside the RCMP's Newton District Office near 72 Avenue and 137 Street.
Surrey RCMP say it appears the vehicle was travelling through the parking lot when it struck the first police car. Witnesses described the civilian vehicle involved as a greenish Ford Explorer and said the damage to the police vehicles was substantial.
The RCMP officer who was on foot and the officer in the car were both taken by ambulance to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
A male officer sustained a minor injury to his leg. A female officer was treated for soft tissue injuries, a haematoma to left shoulder and torn rotator cuff. Both have now been released from hospital and have gone home.
The driver of the suspect vehicle , a 47-year-old Surrey man, was uninjured and was taken into custody.
The investigation into the incident is continuing, with investigators working through Monday night on a report to Crown counsel. Police say it is uncertain what charge or charges will be approved by Crown.
On Tuesday morning, Surrey RCMP Sgt. Dale Carr thanked the community for their kind words of support.
"The outpouring of support for the officers from this community has been inspiring," said Carr.
