A 65-year-old Surrey widower has now dropped a lawsuit to try to get a $228,000 engagement ring back from his former fiancée.
After Jerry Renkers' story went public this week, his lawyer contacted media to say the legal action had been discontinued. She provided no further details and wouldn't say whether a settlement had been reached.
The now-discontinued B.C. Supreme Court suit, which was filed on Valentine's Day, said Renkers began dating 31-year-old UBC student Jessica Miller about a year before proposing to her in January.
The two met through the online dating website establishedmen.com four months after Renkers' wife of 25 years passed away.
Renkers claimed his wife-to-be picked out a 3.42-carat yellow diamond ring at Tiffany and Co. which cost $203,500, plus 24,420 in taxes. Ten days later, the relationship ended.
Renkers alleged his relationship to Miller was costly, as he spent thousands of dollars to furnish her Vancouver apartment, pay her rent, back taxes, credit card bills and repay student loans. He said he also bought her a new car, paid for dental repairs and covered an overdraft line of credit.
Renkers claimed Miller bought a laptop and bike for her brother and after he confronted her on her spending in early February, the two broke up.
He said he feared she would sell the diamond ring and argued he should get it back because the marriage never went ahead and their engagement has been terminated.
