The ex-boyfriend of slain Surrey student Maple Batalia has been ordered to stand trial for first-degree murder in connection with the teen's shooting in 2011.
The trial for Gurjinder (Gary) Dhaliwal and co-accused Gursimar Singh Bedi was ordered after a preliminary hearing of the eviden
ce in Surrey Provincial Court, which ended Monday.
There is a publication ban on evidence presented at preliminary hearings.
Batalia was a 19-year-old student attending SFU Surrey when she was gunned down Sept. 28, 2011 in the parkade outside the university in Central City.
The aspiring model and actress was studying late at night with friends and left the building at about 1 a.m. when she was shot multiple times. She died later in hospital.
Dhaliwal and Bedi were charged more than a year later, in December 2012.
While Dhaliwal faces one first-degree murder charge, Bedi will be tried for manslaughter with a firearm and accessory after the fact.
Dhaliwal has been in custody since his arrest, while Bedi has been free on bail since early last year.
Their case will now proceed to B.C. Supreme Court in New Westminster. The next court date is April 17.
