The City of Surrey plans to build a pedestrian crosswalk at the 152A Street and 16 Avenue intersection, a mere 100 metres from an existing pedestrian-controlled intersection.
White Rock resident Jacqueline Lewis expressed concerns about the 152 Street and 16 Avenue intersection this month to the City of Surrey.
Engineering assistant Maria Albitar responded via email, and told Lewis that the area had been “flagged” for the installation of a pedestrian signal, crossing North Bluff Road at George Street.
“Construction of the pedestrian signal is anticipated in 2019, weather permitting,” Albitar wrote to Lewis in an email. “We believe that pedestrian safety and connectivity in the vicinity will be greatly enhanced with the installation of this signal.”
Lewis thanked Albitar for Surrey’s attention to the crosswalk.
“This will most definitely enhance the safety of the residents that has for a long time been ignored & thank Surrey for taking the lead in this very important issue,” Lewis wrote to Albitar.
Last July, Lewis came across a bloodied senior near 16 Avenue and George Street after the 74-year-old woman slipped on a loose gravel patch in White Rock.
Lewis, along with area-resident Ellen Canesso, helped the injured woman cross 16 Avenue to get medical attention.
“People are whizzing by us, we’re trying to wave them down so we can get this woman across the street,” Lewis told Peace Arch News in July, adding that nobody would stop to let the injured woman cross the street. “Stupid people around here. I’m absolutely ashamed of what’s going on around here – it’s terrible.”
