Surrey council has endorsed a plan for a 20-home subdivision in an upscale neighbourhood in South Surrey.

The approval comes a week after a public hearing that lasted two-and-a-half hours, with people speaking passionately both in favour and against it.

A major concern was the traffic to and from Laronde Elementary School, a French Immersion school which is located just behind the planned subdivision.

Surrey Coun. Dave Woods opposed the plan.

“I’m concerned with the loss of tree canopy here,” Woods told his colleagues.

He asked to have the matter returned to staff to see if more tree canopy could be retained, but his motion to have it reviewed by staff was unsuccessful.

Coun. Tom Gill called the development plan “very thoughtful” and said it reflects the principles of the Semiahmoo Peninsula neighbourhood plan.

“I do think there’s value in this particular project,” Gill said.

The subdivision was approved, with all in favour except Woods, who voted against it.
