Hundreds of former students, staff and friends turned out to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Surrey's oldest high school Saturday afternoon.
The festivities kicked off with an opening ceremony and welcoming remarks in Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary's gymnasium.
A very special guest, Deborah Buchan – Lady Stewartby – is the granddaughter of the school's namesake, John Buchan, Canada's 15th Governor General.
At 100 years of age, Burnaby's Kay Charter may well have been the day's oldest alumnus to attend the June 2 celebration. Charter graduated in 1927, and used to work at the Bank of Montreal in Cloverdale from 1930 to 1940, and at the Royal Bank from 1927 to 1930.
Former students and staff came from as far away as Canada's east coast, Hawaii and even California.
Alumni groups also organized various informal class gatherings over the weekend.
One hundred years after starting off in 1912 as a first year junior high class added to the five-room Cloverdale Public School, Surrey's original high school still seems to operate as a large extended family.
