A view of Vancouver

Report: Vancouver has the worst traffic in North America… even worse than L.A.

Metro Vancouver commuters are spending more and more time in their cars on their way to work. Toronto and Montreal were in the Top 10, too.

Vancouver has the worst traffic of any city in North America – eclipsing the likes of even freeway-wrapped Los Angeles – according to a survey that found Metro Van commuters spend more time in their cars than any other continental city.

GPS software company TomTom conducted the survey, and Vancouver passed other traffic horror shows like L.A., San Francisco, Honolulu, and Seattle, which all placed in North America’s Top 5 (or Low 5) for traffic congestion.

TomTom’s report said the average Vancouverite (including the ‘burbs in Surrey, Burnaby, Richmond, etc.) spends 93 hours a year in traffic jams.

Across all the Americas – Central and South included – Vancouver was only bested by two other cities, Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paolo, both in Brazil.

Toronto placed seventh-worst in North America, and Montreal placed 10th.

from Global BC:

The average Metro Vancouver resident with a 30 minute commute is wasting 93 hours per year stuck in delays. That’s the equivalent of 11.6 working days.

For every hour, about 41 minutes are wasted in traffic delays in Metro Vancouver.

Monday is one of the best days for traffic, with the lowest traffic congestion. Tuesday mornings and Thursday evenings are the worst peak periods of the week, according to TomTom.
