A North Delta home was destroyed by fire Monday morning.
At around 11 a.m. on Dec. 19, firefighters were called to a first-alarm fire at a two-storey home in the 10300-block of Sheaves Place, a quiet cul de sac in the Sunbury neighbourhood.
Tim Ipsen, deputy chief of operations with Delta Fire& Emergency Services, said crews were met with heavy smoke and flames coming from the second floor of the residence and the fire was soon upgraded to a second alarm.
Ipsen said 23 firefighters and a half dozen a half dozen pieces of firefighting apparatus responded to the blaze, but due to “very poor interior conditions and extreme fire load,” crews were forced to attack the fire from outside the home.
Crews remained on scene until Monday evening fighting the stubborn blaze, and Ipsen said winter conditions and freezing water runoff “proved challenging” for firefighters.
Investigators were on scene Tuesday to determine the cause of the fire, however Ipsen said the house appears to be a total loss.
A freelance photographer on scene told the Reporter that bystanders were able to get the home’s five residents out and move a car from the driveway prior to firefighters arriving on scene.
Ipsen said some of the home’s occupants reported minor burns but otherwise there were no injuries.
