A man was injured in what was believed to be a gang-related shooting Tuesday night in Surrey.

Shots rang out through a North Surrey residential area this week in what's believed to be the region's latest gangland shooting.

On Tuesday, just after 10 p.m., the Surrey RCMP responded to a call of shots fired in the 8800 block of 131 Street, just on the border of Newton and Whalley.

Police believe several gunmen shot at three men with gang ties as they arrived home. Only one of them was struck. A 28-year-old was hit in the back and is expected to make a full recovery. The gunmen fled on foot.

It was a targeted attack that has the earmarks of a gang shooting, police say.

"We know that the victim and two associates have numerous criminal associations in the Surrey area and that this incident could be related to any one of those associations." said Sgt Peter Thiessen, spokesperson for the Lower Mainland RCMP. "This was a targeted attack and does have all the earmarks of being gang related."

That said, police do not believe the incident to be a retaliation for any of the recent gang violence in the region.

Police know the identity of the victim, but say they aren't in a position to make that public yet. The same goes for his gang connections.

"Our intelligence would indicate he does have affiliation to a particular group, but we're not in a position to comment on what that group might be at this particular time," said Thiessen.
