A construction worker has been airlifted to hospital with crush injuries to one arm after a vehicle ran into the new South Surrey BCAA office, trapping him under it.

The incident happened in the 16100-block of 24 Avenue shortly before 1:30 p.m.

Witness Tammy Kennedy said she was walking to get a coffee when a westbound Jeep Patriot went through a red light at 161A Street, accelerated across the south-side sidewalk and came to rest embedded in the building.

The worker was trapped between the vehicle’s front passenger tire and the building’s exterior wall.

The Jeep driver was distraught, Kennedy said.

According to the man’s co-workers at the scene, he is a Cloverdale resident who had been working with Norson Construction for about two years.

Rick Beck, site foreman, said he was alerted to the incident by calls for first aid.

He said the worker was fixing a handrail at the scene when the incident unfolded. He is “a tough kid,” Beck said of the injured man, describing the incident as the worst he’s seen in his years with Norson.

Emergency officials at the scene said the victim’s arm was crushed but that he was conscious.

By 1:45 p.m., he was being transported to an air ambulance that had landed at nearby Southridge School.
