A man is in serious condition after falling off the back of an SUV in North Surrey this week.

The vehicle was traveling near 128 A Street and 100 Avenue at about 5:30 p.m. Monday.

A 23-year-old Surrey man was pulling his SUV from the back of his house, down the lane and up to the front of the home. Three men decided to hop onto the back end of the vehicle with the tailgate down for the ride.

The driver accelerated when he got onto 128A Street, and while two of the men were able to hang on, a third tumbled out and hit his head on the pavement.

He was taken to hospital in critical condition, but has since been upgraded to serious condition.

Charges are being considered against the driver.

Surrey RCMP Cpl. Bert Paquet said the unfortunate incident is a timely reminder for people to respect moving vehicles.

"It's a serious and timely reminder to give more respect to the risks involved to riding without vehicle restraints," Paquet said.

"We see it more and more at this time of year. It is a seasonal issue."

Police believe drugs or alcohol may have been contributing factors in the accident.
