A Coquitlam man has been found not criminally responsible in the death of his sister nearly three years ago.
Jarek Paderewski's nine-day trial for the second-degree murder of his older sister, 33-year-old Maja Paderewska, wrapped up in B.C. Supreme Court in New Westminster on Friday.
Her body was found at their parents' Coquitlam townhome in February 2014 when emergency personnel responded to a medical distress call. It's believed Paderewski lived there with his parents, but his sister, a popular teacher at North Surrey Secondary School at the time of her death, lived in Surrey.
Paderewski was arrested at the scene and charged the following day.
In March 2014, Paderewski underwent a psychiatric assessment, but it wasn't until September 2015 that he was ordered to stand trial.
An not criminally responsible designation is used when a mentally ill person is found they were unable to appreciate their actions at the time, could not discern right from wrong, or were not in control of their behaviour because of their mental illness.
