An 83-year-old man was hit by a truck while waiting at this bus stop on Sunday.

A senior is in critical condition after being struck by a truck which was trying to take off after another accident.

On Sunday, just before 5 p.m., a 2005 Dodge pickup smashed into the back of a 1990 Volvo, near 74 Avenue and 120 Street. The driver then pulled back and took off.

He lost control of his truck about 150 meters away and smashed into a bus stop where an 83-year-old man was sitting.

The senior suffered injuries to his head and neck as well as a collapsed lung.

A 26-year-old Surrey man was taken into custody and has since been released.

Charges are expected in relation to the accident.

Surrey RCMP Cpl. Bert Paquet said that leaving the scene of an accident is a wrong move on several levels.

Remain at the place where the accident took place, most of the time it's just a motor vehicle infraction, he said.

"By leaving the scene, you have now committed a criminal offense," Paquet said. "It's a totally different game then."

Apart from facing more severe punishment, staying at the scene and rendering medical assistance when necessary, is just the right thing to do, he said.

"By sticking around and doing the right thing, you might save a life," Paquet said.
