Surrey firefighters work to douse a fire in 5400-block of 148 Street.

A blaze broke out at a Panorama Ridge home this week, causing smoke to plume throughout the surrounding neighbourhood.

While no people were harmed, the fire took the life of a cat.

Just before 9 a.m. on Wednesday, Surrey firefighters were called to a blaze at 5437 148 St. and arrived to find white smoke billowing from the home.

The home was extensively damaged in the fire.

No people were hurt in the blaze, but firefighters found a cat in the home, and brought it into the back yard where they attempted life-saving cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).

All efforts to rescue the cat were unsuccessful.

"They applied oxygen and actively applied CPR on the cat for about 10 to 15 minutes before they realized their efforts were not going to be successful," said Surrey Assistant Fire Chief Steve Robinson. "They did their best to revive the cat."
