A Delta man has been charged with attempted murder after a stabbing Monday night in North Delta.

In a press release issued Wednesday afternoon (Jan. 16), the Delta Police Department said officers responded to numerous calls around 9:20 p.m. on Jan. 14 “regarding a dispute, or a stabbing in progress” in the area of 82nd Avenue and 116th Street.

When police arrived, they found the suspect as he tried to leave the scene and arrested him, while other officers gave first aid to the victim, who was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The Crown has charged 46-year-old Benny Ibanez with one count of attempted murder and will appear in Surrey court on Jan. 17. Police say Ibanez and the victim were known to each other.

“Delta police are very appreciative that a number of people in the area called 911 immediately upon seeing and hearing this dispute, and also attempted to help the victim,” DPD public affairs manager Cris Leykauf said in a press release. “Their quick action allowed police to arrest a suspect right away and also ensured the victim was able to receive timely medical attention.”
