The Delta Chamber of Commerce has announced the appointment of Garry Shearer as its new executive director, effective immediately.
Shearer and his wife Colleen have lived and raised a family in Tsawwassen since 1982 when they moved from Toronto to open a new sales territory for his company in Western Canada, according to a chamber of commerce press release issued Monday morning (Dec. 17).
His success building the business and establishing his company in the west attracted several local start-up companies to recruit Shearer to lead their sales and marketing organizations. Two of the companies, Dees Communications and Hothaus Technologies were started in Delta.
Shearer was also recruited to lead a number of volunteer organizations, starting in 1992 with the Rotary Club of Tsawwassen. He has been the president of the Rotary Club, president of the Delta Hospice Society, president of Beach Grove Golf Club and district governor for Rotary District 5040.
In 2018, Shearer ran for city council as part of former Delta police chief Jim Cessford’s Independents Working for You slate. Shearer came in ninth place, three spots and almost 1,400 votes from a seat on council.
“We were very impressed with Garry’s insights and leadership when he facilitated a strategic planning session for the Chamber in the past” said current chair Les Voros and incoming chair Yvonne Anderson in a press release. “Garry has the business acumen and strategic thinking we need to take the Delta Chamber and our membership to the next level.”
The board thanked outgoing executive director Tom Awrey, who is leaving for family reasons, for his dedicated work over the past three years, saying Awery is leaving the chamber in a good financial position for its development and growth in the future. The board wished Tom and his family the very best.
