Mission council will be collecting input from the firearms advisory committee before implementing any changes to the district’s Discharge Firearms bylaw.
Council unanimously agreed to form the committee this week after receiving input from numerous people at an information meeting two weeks ago on the proposed changes.
About 150 people attended the meeting June 19, most opposing the proposed changes which called for a complete ban on shooting throughout the municipality, except at the Mission and District Rod and Gun Club.
“There was a lot of thought-provoking discussion last week,” commented Coun. Jenny Stevens, who didn’t want to react one way or another until she had more time to digest the information. “We have to get it right.”
A couple of other councillors also felt the process was rushed after reflecting on it.
“I didn’t like my decision and I think we did blow this one,” said Coun. Dave Hensman, who acknowledged there are many people who use Mission’s forests and enjoy shooting. “We need to have all the players at the table to come up with something workable for everyone.”
Mayor Ted Adlem previously told The Record the proposed changes to the bylaw were brought forward to address concerns particularly on the west side of Stave Lake where the Zajac Ranch for Children, Sayres Lake Campground, and the proposed Tim Hortons Children’s Foundation Camp are located.
District staff will be developing a terms of reference and recommending committee members for council’s approval.
